Does My Dog Have an Allergy?

You may have noticed lately that your dog can’t seem to stop scratching himself. He may always seem itchy, and even develop places where he has scratched his skin raw. He may have dry, flaking skin which looks a lot like dandruff in people.

Maybe you assume that it is an insect bite your dog suffers from as fleas are quite common with dogs. Or that it is just dry skin which also can be a reason. But you should know that your dog’s condition may well be caused by an allergy

Many times as opposed to human beings a dog reacts to an allergy by itchy or dry skin instead of sneezing or itchy eyes.

While seasonal allergies are not very common in most dogs, many suffer from different types of food allergies, which manifest themselves through constant scratching, chewing, and head-shaking.

All sorts of grains are the main reason for dog allergies – corn being the most common of all. As corn is the main ingredient of many dog foods there is a good chance that it is the culprit you are looking for.

But other types of grains or even meat can be the reason for your dog’s allergy. There is basically only one way to find out what it really is. Switch your dog’s food and start with the most obvious: Feed him food that does not contain corn.

A meat and rice type dog food is one of the most hyper-allergenic dog foods available–preferably a lamb and rice. It is important to notice you will not see an improvement in the dog’s allergies immediately.

Although it may be frustrating for dog owners, it is important that you patiently and consistently stick to the changes in your dog’s diet. Should there be no improvement after two weeks and your dog still continues scratching himself, then there is a real likelihood of grains being the culprit.

If this happens one of your options is to put your dog on an all meat diet. This will help you to find out if grains are really the reason for your dog’s allergy. But I would recommend you to do this step only after asking your vet for further advice.
