Female Dog Diaper

Us Labradors can sometimes engage in the messy, smelly habit of “marking” our territory or certain objects. This seems to be very strange behavior for humans, and can also present you with a significant amount of cleanup time! Marking objects with urine is instinctual for dogs in the wild, and some domesticated Labradors may still exhibit this behavior. Though it may seem impossible to prevent this behavior, it can be remedied by a good training program, depending on the reasons why your Labrador is marking furniture and other household objects.
Hormonal Stimulation
Us Labradors have an amazing sense of smell, and are able to detect the scent of other dogs that are quite some distance away. This is especially true of male Labradors that have not been neutered, since they have a heightened sensitivity to the hormone signatures of other dogs. If a male Labrador Retriever that has not been neutered picks up the scent of a female dog in heat, it may induce them to begin urinating, or “marking” the house, to send out a hormonal signal to the female. This is a result in the increase in testosterone in a male dog, since that will cause them to exhibit excitement and sometimes odd behavior. It’s important to understand that this is only their instinct, and your male Labrador Retriever is not purposefully trying to cause a messy situation for you to clean up.
Loneliness
If your dog is feeling lonely, depressed, or is experiencing separation anxiety, it is common for them to begin to exhibit many behavior problems. Urinating indoors, or marking certain objects while left alone can signal that your dog is feeling abandoned, and is lacking in positive attention. Us Labradors are very affectionate, and we thrive in an environment where we are given constant attention. Urinating when alone is also very common in dogs that have a history of abandonment. For this type of dog, you need to earn their trust, to help them to understand that you are not going to abandon them. Any indoor urinating is cause for concern, and you need to reassess your relationship with your dog to make sure that you are providing them with enough positive attention.
Territorial Behavior
Male Labradors can become territorial, which is more common for Male Labrador Retrievers than females. Though females can also engage in dominance behavior such as spraying, this is relatively less common than in male Labrador Retrievers. Territorial aggressiveness in itself is relatively rare in the Labrador breed, since Labradors were bred for their agreeable temperament. If your male Labrador Retriever is not neutered, however, they may feel the need to mark their “space”, which is all around the home. A male Labrador that isn’t neutered is much more receptive to the hormonal scent of other dog’s territory markings. Sometimes, this behavior is caused when you have adopted another dog, even if your male Labrador was previously very well-behaved. Though Labradors are not aggressive by nature, they still may feel threatened by the presence of a new dog in your home, and subsequently begin to mark their territory.
How Can I Prevent This Behavior?
Regardless of the cause, it’s important to establish with your dog that urinating indoors is unacceptable behavior. However, you have to be careful not to scold your Labrador Retriever when you find a “mess”. By reprimanding your dog, you may cause them to believe that relieving themselves is wrong, or you may be giving them negative attention that will instead reinforce this behavior. Depending on the cause of your dog’s behavior, one or all of these methods may be necessary.
Neuter Your Male Dog
Male dogs that are neutered tend to stop marking their territory indoors roughly 50% of the time. This should be the first step in stopping your dog’s behavior, since a neutered male Labrador also tends to be much more well-behaved and will not be as distracted by the scent of female dogs in heat.
Dog Diaper
This is a product available specifically for dogs with problems urinating indoors. The dog-diaper is a long, absorbent pad that wraps around your dog’s torso, covering their genitals. If your dog attempts to urinate indoors while wearing the dog-diaper, they will instead end up urinating on the absorbent pad. Aside from preventing a mess indoors, this will also create a very uncomfortable sensation for your dog, discouraging this behavior.
Successful Crate Training
This method relies on the idea that your dog won’t urinate where they sleep. Aside from being a great training tool, a crate can help your dog to control their bladder and let you know when they need to be let outdoors. Also a crate should be a “safe” place for your dog, and they will not feel compelled to spray.
