Have you ever wondered how to approach a shy or fearful dog? If so, you will find that knowing some dog psychology will be very helpful.
Let’s first look at what dogs do, when they feel threatened: They try to be as intimidating as possible through baring their teeth and standing really tall.
So, here is what you do not want to do: Show your teeth (i.e. smiling) and appearing tall when approaching the dog. Instead, do not show your teeth and simply kneel down. This will make you appear much smaller than when standing directly in front of your dog.
Another thing to keep in mind is that dogs are territorial. This makes them defend their territory. SO do not make them feel like you are a threat to their territory. Also be mindful that as pack animals, dogs will be inclined to defend other pack members.
Dogs include their owners as part of their pack. Make sure that the dog is not between yourself and a “member of its pack” when you approach it.
If it is seen that other members of its pack accept you, this will make the dog less fearful. Never try to corner a dog or run after it. This will only cause the dog to become more fearful.
There are two aspects of dog behavior that can be used to reduce their level of fear. One is food. If the owner of the dog will allow you to throw small amounts of food to the dog, you can use this to get the dog to come closer and closer to you.
Secondly, curiosity can also be your friend. You can hold a treat in your hand which you do not show our dog. Simply keep your hand closed but let him smell the treat. Chances are, he will become curious, and he will want the treat. Of course, you should then give it to him.
Thirdly, you can always try to simply play the dog’s favorite game with him. This will be fun for both of you. And it will give the dog the opportunity to approach you rather than the other way around.
