How to Tell Your Puppy to Leave Something Alone

Most puppies love to touch stuff that they are not supposed to touch. What can you do to prevent him from doing this? Here are some tips of how to teach your puppy to listen to you when you want him not to touch certain things.

Many dog owners get angry when their puppy does forbidden things. But always remember to stay patient and to stay calm when you train your puppy to be obedient. Under no circumstances would you want him to become afraid of you.

Your puppy probably got used to messing with things because you were never giving your dog any boundaries or rules. What you will need to do first, is take away all the things that your dog seems to always touch, and when he starts to touch new stuff, take those things away as well.

In many cases a dog will find out then that he is not allowed to touch these things and stop messing around with things that he is not allowed to play with.

Sometimes it is not as easy. In this case you have to come up with a new command for your dog that tells him that he is not allowed to do what he does and has to stop it immediately. You can choose whatever word you like. It can be “no” or “leave it”.

What this command is all about is to teach your dog not to do something. Whenever he does something or approaches something he is not allowed to touch you give this command.

The way to teach him this command is to be very observant. Watch your dog carefully and as he touches something, make a loud noise that catches your dog by surprise.

Then give him the “no”-command. But here is what you should be aware of: Do this every time your pup touches things you do not want him to touch. Then – and only then – will he learn what he is not allowed to do.

Every time you tell him no, when he is thinking about touching something, he will know not to do it.
