Metal Folding Pet
Have you ever spent $400 on a pocketknife? Very few knives are beautiful enough to command such a large price tag. Cold Steel’s Hatamoto folding knife has a suggested retail value of $389.99. Although its not quite 400 bucks, it is PRETTY darn close.
You can actually get the knife for MUCH cheaper than 389.99, but we’ll get to that in a couple of moments. I recently got a GREAT price on the Hatamoto and here are my observations:
Blade length: 4 inches. The blade is built like a tank. ROCK solid. Long enough to be useful in most situations but not so massive that it will be a pain in the neck.
Blade Material: VG-1 San Mai III. This steel is unique to Cold Steel’s high-end knives. The inner core (cutting edge) is made from VG-1 Stainless which is folded together with 400 series stainless steel.
The folded steel means that the blade will have great edge retention but the 400 series “softer” steel makes the knife much less brittle.
You should be able to see a very “faint” lamination line running just above the edge of the blade. This lamination line is a result of the folded steel and covers the entire length of the edge.
My knife was shaving sharp out of the box. You would expect this from such an expensive knife.
The blade also has jimping or “thumb grooves” on the spine, which is nice for making various types of cuts.
Hatamotos are hollow ground, which means that the blade goes from really thick at the spine to a very THIN edge.
Other positives of the Hatamoto:
· The pocket clip is reversible. You get an extra pocket clip just in case. · Comes in a “custom series” metal box. · G-10 Handle material feels very nice in your hand. · Super tough liner lock, which has been tested to over 100 pounds of pressure.
Downsides of the Hatamoto:
· If you don’t know where to get a good price, these knives can be EXPENSIVE.
