Chewing

Dogs, especially puppies, have the habit of chewing anything they see. They explore their surroundings by tasting anything they can find. To address this problem, first you need to remove anything that may post danger to your pet. Hide electrical wiring behind furniture, put cleaning supplies out of their reach and clear the floor of small objects. One thing that you can also do is buy a toy for your pet that he can chew anytime. This should be available whenever he is in his living area or bed. Whenever you see him about to chew on something, give him a signal that you disagree on his plan and give him his toys to chew instead.

Jumping

Jumping is not one of serious dog behavior problems, but it is habit that your pet would naturally develop. Whenever a dog jumps, it means that they are expressing excitement and happiness. The problem however lies when the timing is wrong such as when you are wearing your favorite clothes or when your dog’s paws are dirty. Another problem would be if the dog jumps on other people that might scare these people away. The best way to solve this is to allow the dog to jump only on you. Anticipate their jumping by checking their hind legs if they crouch down. And when they jump, you can discourage them by putting your knee on their chest and then praise them when they have their paws back on the ground.

Digging

Dog will naturally dig when they are bored or when they need some cooling/heating pits. There are a couple of ways to approach this problem. First, refill the holes not with soil but with junk. These junks will actually discourage your dog in digging in the soil. Definitely, they would stop playing with the soil if they would not find what they are looking for. Second, use a sandbox. Since dogs have the natural tendency to dig, it is then good to have a designated place where they can dig. Put the sandbox in a cool place when it is summer and warm area when it is winter.

Teach your dog to dig only in the sandbox. Put some toys and treats in the sandbox so that you can entice them to play in the sandbox. If you observed that the dog is still digging in the area other than the sandbox, patiently direct him back to his play pen. You can even demonstrate how to dig in the sandbox so that your pet would follow your lead.

Biting

Even if it is natural for dogs to bite, do not encourage them to make it a habit. If your dog plays by biting your hand, replace it with his chewing toy. If the dog still did not stop, then cease playing with him. The dog will eventually stop biting if he noticed that you are giving him the message that you are not interested. However if you are training the dog and you notice that the dog is not happy when you tried to stop him from biting, then you might as well stop training first and place him back to his place.

There are other dog behavior problems that may occur with your dogs. The common factor in addressing these problems is to let your dog know that they need to discontinue that habit. It is also important that you give him the message that you would love him more if he stops doing those actions.
