From the moment you bring your new puppy home, you are taking on the role of a pack leader, and your pup looks to you just like he would look to his mother for safety, shelter and food.
But your puppy is going to repay the favor many times over: He will love and adore, and he will always be happy to see you. To ensure this happens, make sure you are there for him as much as possible.
When you take your puppy home with you for the first time, this is a daunting experience for the puppy. Most likely, it is the first time that he has been separated from his mother. Hence, he might be anxious and confused.
His mother was always around him. She would discipline him if he was being naughty, but she would also be loving, kind, and protective of her kids. Of course, now this is the role you will need to play for your puppy. He will rely on your guidance.
You and your family need to decide on the rules that you want the puppy to live by. Do this before you bring him home. For example, you might want to say that it is not okay for him to be on furniture. That would be sensible, and if that’s what you want, that all of you will enforce the rule.
If different people enforce different rules, it can be extremely confusing for your puppy, and it would not be fair to expect him to understand the rules.
After house rules are laid down, decide on a feeding time that your pup can depend on, as well as a walking schedule, treat times, play time in the house as well as quiet time in a little cage or house.
Your pup will need to go outside to use the bathroom very frequently. Help him by taking him outside often, and never punish him if there is an accident, because you could not “hold it.”
Accidents can be frustrating, but be sure to know that dogs rarely have accidents on purpose. Chances are, your puppy is doing the best he can to please you. So always give him the benefit of the doubt and be loving and caring and the trust between you will grow stronger and stronger.
