Have you ever wondered why some puppies are sociable while others seem to lack such skills? It’s not hereditary. They begin to learn social skills from the moment they’re born. By spending time with their mother and their littermates, they slowly adopt similar behaviors. If the mother is fearful or nervous, so too, will be her pups. On the other hand, if a puppy is separated too soon from his mom and littermates, he won’t develop the proper skills. This can translate into playing too hard, biting, and other unacceptable behaviors.
If you own a puppy, it’s worth understanding how he’ll develop during his first twelve months. In the event that you adopted him soon after his birth, you may need to teach him the social skills he would have otherwise learned from his mom and littermates.
What To Expect During The First Month
During his first month, your pup will stick closely to his mother and littermates. They will be his main influence. His eyes will normally remain closed until the second week, though he’ll be able to feel and taste immediately following his birth. By the second or third week, he’ll attempt to stand and walk. He may even begin barking. By the end of his first month, all of his senses will have fully developed.
Learning To Socialize
The next eight weeks are devoted mostly to socialization. It’s during this time that exposure to others outside his family – both dogs and humans – can play an important role in his future ability to socialize. He’ll begin learning a number of skills from his brothers and sisters, including how to play, how to interact, and what it means to be a dog.
Your puppy will also begin to explore on his own. This is a critical time. Positive experiences will encourage his trust in others while negative experiences will create lasting fear. By the end of his twelfth week, your pup will shift his attention toward people.
Finding His Place Among His Peers
During the next few months, your puppy will begin to understand his position in the hierarchy of your household. That includes his ranking amongst his littermates, other dogs, and members of your family. He might start displaying dominance as he tests his boundaries. It’s important to set precedents that help him understand his role. However, keep in mind that he’s still susceptible to learning fear. Be gentle.
Exploring His Adolescence
The next several months are spent displaying increasing levels of dominance, especially if you have neglected to clearly establish your household’s ranking order. If you have ever witnessed an adult dog behaving aggressively with his owner, the problem is often due to the owner’s failure to establish his role as pack leader. Your pup will challenge your authority. This is a natural part of his adolescence. When it happens, apply discipline.
The social skills your puppy learns during his first year are critical to his ability to interact with other dogs and people in the future. If you adopt him early in his life, he’ll rely upon you to help him learn many of those skills.
