What Command Should I Teach My Dog First?

Dogs are extremely intelligent and affectionate animals. It is no wonder that they are man’s best friend. They continuously provide us company, joy, and even protection.

Some puppy training will make your life and your dog’s life much easier. It is recommended to start with basic obedience training. But what are the individual steps and in which order should you teach the commands to your dog?

The first command you’ll want to teach your dog is the command “sit”. This will become very beneficial in times that you want your dog to behave. Since your pet is just a puppy, you’ll need some tiny dog treats that will be their reward if they do the command.

Your puppy wants you to be happy with what he does and a treat shows him exactly that. As time goes by it will be sufficient to only praise him. A treat will then not be necessary anymore. If this is the case, move on to teach him “stay”.

The “Stay” command reinforces the “sit” command and should be taught as command no. 2. Do so as soon as your puppy knows “sit”.

The basic difference between “sit” and “stay” is that you will be able to leave your dog and have him stay in the same place and wait for you there until you come back.

The next command that you can teach your new puppy is to “lie down”. Ask your puppy to sit and then let him stay that way for a moment.

Then take the treat and put it close to floor which will become an instinct for them to go lower. As soon as your dog is down on the floor you can give the treat. Repetition is the key to successfully train your pet.

Fifteen minutes per day will be enough for your dog to learn and remember these basic commands. After you are done with these commands, then there are many more commands that you could teach him.
