There are three types of bark collars for dogs; the tone method, stimulation, and citronella spray collars. Every one of the collars operate with the same principle, when your dog barks a corrective stimulus that disrupts the barking will happen. This is supposed to work by having your dog associate barking with the corrective action and learn to stop.
Citronella spray collars; give off a spray of citronella directly in front of your dogs face when they bark. It is controlled with a small microphone that recognizes the sound and sends a signal for the spray to be activated. The microphone can be adjusted so that your dog will not be sprayed if another dog barks.
Tone Correction Collar; this type of bark collars for dogs uses a loud tone to get your dogs attention away from barking and possible bother their ears. One model goes on automatically whenever your dog barks. The other model of tone collar works with remote control. You get to decide when the sound should go on, if your dog will not stop barking than you sound off the tone.
Stimulations Collars; the stimulations collar gives your dog a small shock whenever they bark, it senses the vocal cord vibrations, and then sends out electrical impulses through your dogs neck.
The reports of a survey conducted by PetSafe states that two thirds of dog owners reported that after using the electronic bark collars for dogs for a period of time their dogs learned to not bark. They were able to take off the collars after an unspecified amount of time and the dogs still did not bark. Only a small amount of owners reported having to retrain their dogs by putting the collar back on.
Bark collars for dogs are not meant to harm your dog, the electrical pulse that is sent out by the stimulation collar is compared to the static received when you walk on a carpet in the cold. This will not hurt, but only give a small shock to your dog. When these are used the right way for the right reasons they will stop your dog from barking. Keep in mind that bark collars for dogs can stop all barking even the bark you may want to hear if there is an intruder at your home.
